A donation of cryptocurrency has specific rules that are set out by the IRS. If a donor makes a gift of cryptocurrency that exceeds $500 in value, the donor must file a Form 8283 with their tax return. If a donor makes a gift that exceeds $5,000, the donor will need to obtain a qualified appraisal of the gift at their own expense.
